On Thursday, October 10th, the beautiful and art-filled Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center was teeming with more than 75 guests and allies gathered to honor Washington State Representative Tina Orwall and Future for Us Co-Founder Sage Ke’alohilani Quiamno for their incredible advocacy and accomplishments in furthering women’s causes at the 3rd Annual Shero Awards.
The celebration began with a cocktail hour featuring light bites, desserts and wine along with live music, entertaining games and a silent auction. Emcee Erin Jones then kicked off the program with a lively welcome and introduced Seattle NOW President Kjersten Gmeiner who awarded the honorees.
A moving video was played that highlighted Rep. Tina Orwall’s accomplishments in reforming and expediting rape kit processing, which resulted in the conviction of several serial rapists, before a representative was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award on Tina’s behalf.
Sage Ke’alohilani Quiamno was then recognized with the Rising Star Award for her many efforts in fighting for pay equity, especially for women of color, through her organization Future for Us.
After receiving her award, Sage shared with the audience:
Words cannot describe the overwhelming sense of pride and anxiousness I feel as we continue to do the work through Future for Us to advance womxn of color in the workplace. We live in a time where womxn of color are 20% of the US population but hold 50% of the lowest wage work in this country…The opportunity gap is real and I am heartbroken to hear countless stories nationwide of womxn of color who internalize this systematic issue but still continue forward despite the barriers…Mahalo to my supporters and community who continue to take a chance on me every day, so I’m able do this work
The inspiring event culminated with President Kjersten Gmeiner thanking event sponsors and volunteers as guests continued to enjoy music, take photos and socialize. View Photo Gallery!
