Latest News Update: 2nd Annual SHERO Awards

Recently, on September 8th, the Seattle National Organization for Women (NOW) hosted their 2nd Annual Shero Awards at the Riveter in Capitol Hill. The inspiring fundraising event was held to honor two remarkable women who have made significant efforts and accomplishments regarding women’s issues here in Washington State, as well as nationwide, and was a festive gathering of the NOW community.

The evening began with a small welcome reception where several guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, a silent auction and balloon pop gift game before taking their seats for the formal awards ceremony. Emcee Erin Jones opened with a few personal stories of her own before inviting Esther Lucero to the stage to accept the Rising Star Award for Abigail Echo-Hawk.

After a moving video of Abigail accepting her award and challenging guests with the question of “how big is your brave?” Erin Jones called China Fortson to the stage to present her long-time friend and colleague Senator Rosa Franklin with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Senator Franklin brought tears to the eyes of many as she recounted some of the adversity she faced throughout her career and life. She pressed the audience with the message that they can’t get tired and the need to continue the fight for equality.

The evening culminated in a brief speech from NOW Seattle President Kjersten Gmeiner about ways to get involved with Seattle NOW and the efforts they make fighting for women’s rights and justice.
