This past week in Olympia was the beginning of the 2013 Legislative Session with Christine Gregoire introducing her final budget and her final address to the Legislature. Governor Inslee was sworn into office as well as all of the newly elected and re-elected legislators, statewide electeds, and Supreme Court Justices. The House of Representatives continues with the majority party and leadership by the Democrats. The Senate adopted new rules and reorganized itself. The “Majority Coalition Caucus” made up of the Republicans and two Democrats appointed the chairs of the Senate Committees. As the session has just begun there are not a large number of bills yet that have been introduced there are not many bills on this week’s alert list.

HB 1044 and SB 5009 – the Reproductive Parity Act
HB 1044 is sponsored by Representative Eileen Cody and is in the House Health Care and Wellness Committee.
SB 5009 is sponsored by Senator Steve Hobbs and is in the Senate Health Care Committee
Action: Contact your members of the legislature and tell them to protect the freedom and privacy of women in Washington State to make the decision on whether or not to become a parent themselves by supporting HB 1044 and SB 5099. The voters of Washington State have upheld this right numerous times!
Both bills would ensure that women in WA State continue to have access to abortion coverage in the health insurance plans, as our state implements the Affordable Care Act.
